Clashes break out as residents are evicted from a Brazilian slum

On Thursday, violence erupted in Sao Paulo, Brazil when police were sent to evict an estimated eighty families from government owned land from a slum district.

Residents protesting threw rocks and torched ten cars and one bus to prevent police from entering the slum in the district of Cidade Tiradentes. Police responded with tear gas.

Authorities reported that no arrests were made and no one was injured.

Police reported that residents have been living illegally on the land for almost fifteen years and that low-income housing units are scheduled to be built on the land.
