A report by the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, found that at least two hundred million girls and women alive today have undergone female genital mutilation in thirty different countries. The study indicates the 50% of these “cuttings” have occurred in three countries, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Indonesia.
The United Nations and human rights organizations across the globe are calling for a complete ban on the practice of female genital mutilation.
While many countries have passed new laws that criminalize or outlaw the practice, these laws are not regularly enforced.
The United Nations predicts that the number of girls and women subjected to this barbaric mutilation will increase significantly over the next fifteen years if the current rate of the practice continues.
